​Dizlee, Zain’s API Platform helps Zain Iraq receive the ‘Leading Carrier in DCB’ At the Global Carrier Billing Awards

The recently held annual Informa Global Carrier Billing Awards in Berlin witnessed Zain’s operation in Iraq acknowledged with the ‘Leading Carrier in DCB’ award, beating out several other leading mobile operators across the globe.

Notably, Zain was the first operator in Iraq to launch Direct Carrier Billing services and today it is the largest payment channel in the country for digital services

The Challenge

Zain Iraq aspired to provide state-of-the-art digital services to its customers, which proved to be challenging since the country’s financial inclusion is relatively low. The Operator faced many obstacles such as low internet penetration, late 4G deployment, dominant prepaid market, low digital awareness.

When the DCB program was launched in Iraq, the operator was looking for the right partner to bring them world-class digital services which would provide robust revenues as well as delight customers. This was tricky in its own way since many of the global content providers did not realize the attractiveness and lucrative opportunities of the Iraq market.

The Solution

Dizlee (earlier titled the Zain Group API program) was launched in 2018 with the aim of providing international partners a unified and seamless access to all Zain Opcos. The program offered large content providers access to 50 Million customers across 7 different countries.

Global premium service providers like Docomo Digital, Digital Virgo and Infomedia connected to the Dizlee platform and launched multiple services across the Zain footprint, including Iraq. These merchants soon saw the immense potential of the Iraq market once they witnessed the impressive uptake by the Iraqi community. Subsequently, they focused on enhancing and promoting their digital services. Moreover, Iraq DCB’s offering attracted Google Play services, which today accounts for lucrative gross revenues every month.

The Results

As of September 2022, Zain Iraq DCB Services have more than 5 million unique customers, representing over 30% of the Zain Mobile customer base.

Zain Iraq DCB is the largest payment channel in the country for digital services, larger than similar channels for other operators, mobile wallets and bank cards.​ Increased retention and reduced churn were reported among DCB customers in Zain Iraq.
